What kind of games are people playing on this forum. I would assume with this semi-large group of Nerds and Geeks, we have at least a few role-players in here.
I currently play two nights a week. On Wednesday nights, the reason it was hard for me to listen to WMD, I play Advanced Dungeon's and Dragon's (2nd Edition, because I'm old and the new systems are too much like video games, especially WoW) and on Sundays I play in a Star Wars campaign.
I currently have a character which I have been playing for nearly six straight years and for the first five years I played him at least once a week. The first couple of years I played him twice a week, so I would guess I have had at least 550+ sessions with him. Each of those sessions lasts about an average of 5 hours so that's some serious time put into that character. I am a total Geek and proud of it.
Let's talk about some role-playing games, that is if anyone plays.

Oh, man! I haven't played an RPG in years, but I used to love playing Rifts, Robotech as well as AD&D. Once in a while my buddies and I would break out the Star Wars RPG, Beyond the Supernatural and Battletech. Most of the time I'd end up with DM duty, which was okay for the most part until somebody got pissed. I was one of the DMs that usually riffed without a big drawn up plan. I found that the more I planned my games, the more likely people would somehow throw a wrench and/or deviate that I wound up improvising most of the time anyway. Freestyle, baby! ;D I loved playing Star Wars since it was based on a D6 system (I don't know if it's changed) but I never got to play it much. I have to say that out of all those games, Beyond the Supernatural was my favorite to DM... one of the best games I DM'd was with only two other players and it was one of those impromptu games where I really didn't have anything planned (or ideas for that matter) with where it was going, but it turned out pretty awesome in the end. One of these days I'm going to dig up the ol' box o' games and dust off a book and set up a game... some day.

I am the same way with running a game. I am like the relief DM of our group. My friend Clint is an amazing DM and he runs pretty much all the game. Right now I am running a Marvel game and a Star Trek game. I like to just riff my way through a game I only really have a basic idea on running. That way it's fresh and new to me also. I tend to also do better when I have limited amounts of my game planned ahead of time. That way the players can't mess anything up.
You will be disappointed to find out that just about EVERY game system has changed to the d20 system, which sucks ass. You have to learn a whole new system over to be able to play with the new books. That's why I haven't bought a new book in a long time. If you read the new versions of AD&D you would probably drop a deuce right on the book itself.
It a shame really. At this time we still use all the rules from the mid-eighties and we seem to be doing just fine. Percentile for Star Trek and AD&D stats mostly for Star Wars. I know it sounds weird, but it works wonderfully. We have been thinking about doing a roleplaying podcast in the near future, with recorded sessions from our weekly games.

Sounds like RPG companies have found a way to get people to "upgrade" LOL. I forgot about the Marvel RPG--that was another game I enjoyed... referencing that damned chart at the back. LOL The books have long disintegrated into a pile of paper sheets. Have you listened to the D&D/Penny Arcade podcasts? They're pretty good--the first episode has Scott Kurtz of PVP and the second episode has Wil Wheaton joining the group. Brings back a lot of memories.

I did actually listen to those sessions and I was a little disgusted. It wasn't terrible, it was just very disruptive and very rules oriented. I have already been there and done that kind of roleplaying, back in the days of thinking Gary Gygax had all the answers. We have played many sessions with barely rolling any dice at all. We tend to focus a lot more on storylines lately.
I have tons of role-playing games and I think I will take a digital photo of my collection and post it here to show off. I have TONS of stuff. It's simply amazing how many books and games I have collected over the years.

I agree. It didn't bother me too much, but I wonder if that was a by-product of D&D 4th ed.? It seems that they tried to account for every variable... there was some next-level shit that I never would have bothered with. Too much time spent working the system rather than focusing on a fluid game.
I should see if I can dig up some of my books too and take some shots, too. My old Star Wars books were littered with post-its and yellow highlights. LOL.
I used to have tons of miniatures and what-not but most of the them ended up being sold or traded.

Here are the photos of my books, I have too many to actually shoot face up, so you have to deal with just the bindings. I also have the Star Trek box set and the Marvel box set which aren't shown here, along with a few other books like, Battlestar Galactica and some Star Trek ship manual books. Michael

Nice collection. Mine wasn't nearly as comprehensive.
GURPS! Damn I wanted to like that game. LOL. I wish the Dummies book was around back in the day. Ugh.
I had Call of Cthulu, but never had a chance to play it. Seemed to be a difficult one to get into, if I recall.

I've been wanting to get into a basic D&D type RPG for years, but my most recent attempt at returning was spoiled by the biggest problem with RPG's: Playing with the right people.
I was visiting friends in Montreal who played on a regular basis. They invited me to join them for the two nights I was there, so I took the time to create a character including several drawings of him and his gear. So I showed up at the game and granted, they were just getting off of a campaign, but knowing I was just there for two nights the DM could have thrown the dog a bone and put me in a bar fight at least! I was given a plot for my character and I exhausted ever conceivable entry into it that I could think of but in the end, the entire five hour session consisted of me rolling the dice once to find out what my birthday was. Every attempt to follow the DM's story was shot down by him, possibly because he would only acknowledge our activity if we declared it in the voice of our characters to his satisfaction. More emphasis on the RP than the G, I guess. At least we didn't have to dress up. Basically, I was made to be the audience of their family reunions and gear repair because of a DM who was quite creative, but completely egotistical and a bit of a power tripper.
They actually asked me if I was coming back the next night at the end of that session! What a joke!
I know not all DM's or gamers are like this but until I know for certain that the DM is aware that their job is to see that everyone at the table is having fun, I'm not interested. Life is too short to be subjected to some social reject's attempt at feeling powerful by treating newcomers to their clique as "noobs".
My guess is Michael or Manny would make great Game Masters though, so if either are throwing games while we're in the same city, count me in!
P.S. - Man, that Robotech & the Marvel RPG book covers really bring back a lot of memories. Mike, remember sitting in the NJHS field house gaming? How ironic was that eh? Gaming in the gymnasium! Hilarious.

Wow. That's silly... I've never encountered such a person (thank god, LOL)--plenty of gamers who really go into their role (which is cool!) but never a DM like that. It's a game, yeah, but there should be some freedom for crying out loud! It's supposed to be FUN. ~ Jay, if we end up moving back to NB I promise I'll DM a game for all those interested. ;D (Now... where did I put those books? *gumble-grumble*)
