This weekend I was treated to a really awesome father's day gift: The Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection on Blu-Ray. It contains all the original Trek movies: - Star Trek: The Motion Picture
- Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
- Star Trek III: The Search For Spock
- Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
- Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
- Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country; and
- The Captains' Summit Bonus Disc
The first film I watched (and only one so far) was, of course, Wrath of Khan. It's amazing how well this movie holds up. The overall tone of the movie is dated (Kirk's apartment is awesome, LOL), but it's still fun to watch. The amount of detail is amazing: the edges of adhesive tchotchkes, Shatner's wig, the garbage mattes ghosted around the vessels in space, etc. all there to see. In some instances you can see flaws such as when we see the Genesis station passing by the moon; the station appears to be semi-opaque and a minute amount of moon detail is visible through it.

I saw my friends copy of Star Trek TWOK on Blu-Ray and I thought the picture quality on it was kind of bad. I fear pointing out the problems I saw, because sometimes when you don't realize something it's better, but I'm going to anyways.
I thought the grain reduction was a little much in that movie and peoples faces looked like silly putty to me. It's really too bad one of the BEST movies in terms of storyline and action was one of the cheapest looking movies. The sound on it was pretty decent though. I was surprised to see how well it was remastered.
The one great thing about high-def movie transfers is that we are going to be able to see all the flaws with special effects and matte paintings in more detail now. I can't wait.

Had they used grain reduction? That's too bad. Too bad the whiney folk complained about the picture being TOO clear--I want to see all the detail, warts and all.
The Dark Knight's IMAX sequences look AMAZING on Blu-Ray. Such crisp and clear picture compared to the rest. (It's interesting to see it jump from widescreen to fullscreen and back... I didn't notice at first).
