'it would appear as if actor Chris Hemsworth -- who played Kirk's father in the opening scenes of Star Trek -- has been cast as Thor in Marvel's big-budgeted, live-action film due out in theaters on May 20, 2011. Kenneth Branagh is set to direct, with production currently scheduled to begin early next year.' Click on the picture for more from Cinematical...

I think this is good casting. Not great, but good. He did a solid job in Star Trek, but that was 10 minutes. Can he hold an hour and a half movie? I hope so. Got the look, though.

I'm curious as to the circumstances leading to his being hired for this role. He's fairly wet behind the ears (Star Trek was his first movie) and a handful of appearances in various TV shows under his belt... as well as competing in Dancing with the Stars. He must have had a good audition for Marvel to offer him the lead. That said: I'm leaning slightly on the "Meh" side of the fence for the moment.

From what Mike tells me all the producers and what not were "meh" about him too. But they shot tape on him anyway......when Branagh saw the tape.......he said, Thats him.
As for me.......Im hoping for a "Leger/Joker" moment. Lets see what the kid can do.

Yeah, I was just warming up to seeing that Hunnam guy in the role... I'm not sure I buy this guy yet, but as everyone has said, we'll just have to wait and see how he does. Branagh usually has a good eye for this... Canoe Reeves in Much Ado About Nothing aside.

OK, now I'm starting to get a 90210 vibe off this movie... C'mon Kenneth... Don't let me down.

Check out his resume, before you judge this one, J. He seems to have the chops. And I don't think he's as pretty as Josh Hartnett, who I see as the 90210 choice.

I've seen this guy act, and you're right: He isn't bad. But it's not just the acting though. It's the look and vibe they give off (and yes, I know, I'm basing how I feel on what I've seen to date, and we may be surprised).
It's just that I can easily see both of these actors (Thor & Loki) in a college movie about dorm-room buddies. I don't get the mythological-gods-who-have-battled-against-frost-giants-and-the-like-for-ages vibe. Maybe I just don't have a good enough imagination or suspension of disbelief.
I understand needing actors who won't be in a walker by the time the seventh film in the franchise is made, and I understand wanting pretty people because that's just the shallow society we live in... I just have a more mature look and feel for my superhero movie ideals, with exceptions to characters who are actually young, pretty and bubble-gum (Spidey, Robin, New Mutants, Teen Titans, etc.).
That's just me.
All that being said, I'm still holding out hope because of the director.
