Since Mike & I teamed up for the most recent show poster featuring members of Agents of Atlas taking on the new Captain America, I thought I might point out the series it was taken from, since it's still kind of laying low for most Marvel Zombies out there, despite being a quality read.
This series is one of those surprise hits like the Immortal Iron Fist, comprised of B string characters that few from the current generation know, care much about or even remember. With one foot in the commercial, continuity-driven event "Dark Reign", and one foot in the fun, retro, slightly obscure Golden Age, Agents of Atlas is like a breath of fresh air in mainstream superhero books. You still get the fanboy fix of a series fitting in with the bigger Marvel Universe, while avoiding the generic feel that can accompany a lot of that kind of product.
Like the Losers from DC, the Agents in this series have their roots in their own, unrelated books from Marvel's Golden Age. It wasn't until an issue of What If in the seventies that this motley crew came together.
The current roster includes super spy Jimmy Woo, talking Gorilla Man Ken Hale, the siren Venus, Namor's cousin Namora, Uranus's Marvel Boy and the silent robot M-11 (see ya later 3D Man). I don't know about you, but anything with a wry, talking gorilla and a killer robot is going to end up in my collection for sure.
The recent return of the team in a 2006-07 mini series has since been collected in a trade and is a real fun read. This would be a great start if you want to get into the current series that ties in with Norman Osborn's efforts to rule the Marvel Universe. Although their motives are ultimately positive, their methods are unlike most anything you see in super books these days. While appearing as a villainous team, their machinations ultimately will play a role in Osborn's failure, I believe.
Newsarama has been kind enough to offer us a preview of the next and fifth issue in the series HERE.
Check it out and I bet you'll get a kick out of it.
