EXTRA, EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT!!! READ ALL ABOUT IT!!! READ ALL ABOUT IT!!!
YAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!! [applause]
Hey everyone! In lieu of an on air version of New Comics Day this week, I thought I'd provide a forum version to bridge the gap... Not the same, I know, but it's just until WMD is back in fine, broadcasting form. I'll see if I can't make it interesting in it's own way. So let's get to 'em!
I'll kick it off with Tim Sale and Steven T. Seagle's final issue of Amazon. This three issue mini (wrapping up with this issue) is not only beautiful, but also has an interesting publishing history.
Also from Dark Horse, is an issue of one of my favourite team books on the shelves today; the Umbrella Academy. This is also the final issue, but only of an arc in an ongoing series. If you like superheroes, science fiction, slice of life stories about dysfunctional families and fantastic art from Gabriel Ba (who has become one of my favourite artists), this book is for you.
Azrael - Deaths Dark Knight #3 is also a final issue of a mini that is a part of the epic Battle for the Cowl series. Frazier Irving's art is worth the price of admission alone.
While we're on a role, let's mention another Battle for the Cowl mini wrapping up: Oracle #3 of 3.
The prelude to Blackest Night chugs along with GREEN LANTERN CORPS #36, featuring Sodam Yat and an Oa in dire straits.
A new Dark Tower arc has started, titled "the Fall of Gilead". I believe this is the first arc without Jae Lee doing pencils, although I highly doubt the art will suffer as a result.
Wolverine #73... I think we've said enough about that HERE.
Unknown #1 from Mark Waid, & Boom Studios kicks off an intriguing miniseries about science possibly cracking the secrets of immortality.
As usual, I picked up a few books for myself this week, starting with Vertigo's House of Mystery #13. This issue is especially sweet because of the all-star line-up of talent:Matthew Sturges, Bill Willingham, Chris Roberson, Neal Adams, Ralph Reese, Sergio Aragones and Eric Powell!!! Great series for fans of Sandman or Fables.
R.E.B.E.L.S. is something that I never thought I'd buy, until I saw that Andy Clarke was doing the art. Ever since his work on the "One Year Later" Batman stuff, I've decided to pick up whatever he works on. Having the Legion of Super Heroes play a key role in Action Comics recently, and currently in Final Crisis... sort of... certainly gave me a bit of an entry point as well, although most fans of sci-fi and superheroes could probably get into it.
Since I won't be going to see the live-action G.I. Joe movie, I'm making up for it by picking up G.I. Joe - Cobra (the best G.I. Joe comic I've seen in a long time) and watching Warren Ellis' "Resolute".
Before Nick Fury became the super spy we all know now, he was a tough-as-nails WWII war hero with the Howling Commandos. Marvel has put out a great looking one-shot about this legendary team with gorgeous art from John Paul Leon. Fans of Tommy Lee Edwards stuff might like the look of this too.
Vertigo is giving us all a great chance to try out the new series from two masters of the fantasy genre in comics; Mike Carey & Peter Gross. For less than two bucks, you can try out the Unwritten. When Brian K. Vaughan (creator of Y the Last Man, Runaways & Pride of Baghdad says he wishes he had thought of the premise for this book, you know it's good.)
And finally, from Darkhorse, I picked up the second, incredibly handsome hardcover collection of David Malki's Wondermark comic strips. If you like old clip art and a Monty Python-ish type of silly humour, you might want to check this one out.
So there you go folks! As usual, I'd like to highly recommend, that everyone out there should READ MORE COMICS!!!
