The Mars Volta is one of my favourite metal/prog groups of all time. They have a tight, dynamic style that often incorporates latin influences into a proggressive rock structure. Think Santana meets Tool. I'd recommend avoiding their live recording though as it looses the precision of their studio work and emphasizes the noise-scapes that populate the spaces between songs on their albums. Here's a taste.

I LOVE The Mars Volta... Finally got to see them a while back at a secret show in Los Angeles. They played under another name... darn it can't remember the name. I thought At the Drive-In was great, but Mars Volta really took it to another level. Omar's solo stuff is good, too, but only in doses (a listen per week or so).

Honestly I didn't even see this post until now, but I wanted to comment anyways. I love me some Mars Volta also. The newer stuff is rather lack luster to me, but the orginal stuff from "Deloused In The Cormatorium" (Spelling?) and "Frances The Mute", was some good shit.
As far as the new stuff goes, well I bought most of it, but it seems now that Omar is just showing off instead of producing really good stuff anymore. It's more for the sake of putting it out rather than making great music. He's done like 10 albums under various names since like 2006 or something. Come on, that's kind of insane. The sad thing is that most of it is not that good, at least to me.
